Muskrat Dam First Nation Suicide Prevention Program

All 50 communities within NAN region have received training in Suicide Prevention and Intervention and the training is ongoing. NAN Suicide Prevention Programs focus on the strength of family values and spirituality to help combat the high rate of youth suicide in the NAN Territory. Objectives
To work together with all community members.
Key Components

Use of traditions or ceremonies
The Elders teach young children how to do outdoor activities such as fishing, harvesting, hunting and preparing wild meat such moose, ducks and geese. They also teach them how to prepare native wild style gourmet foods with wild meat. Religion is used.
Role of Elders
Elders participate in gatherings and share what they learned to the young generation. The Elder’s speak of the bible.
Role of youth
High school students come home at the end of the school year and participate in sporting activities such as broomball, hockey tournaments on other reserves.
