Sandy Lake First Nation Suicide Prevention Program
Abstract:
Please refer to the Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Strategy Suicide Prevention Toolkit for more information. All 50 communities within NAN region have received training in Suicide Prevention and Intervention and the training is ongoing. NAN Suicide Prevention Programs focus on the strength of family values and spirituality to help combat the high rate of youth suicide in the NAN Territory. Objectives
To support the community in times of crisis in terms of intervention and prevention.
Key Components
They have a first response team of front line workers, Chief and Council and other community members. They host workshops and radio shows which deal with different topics such as Suicide Prevention and Intervention.
Use of traditions or ceremonies
They have an option for traditional teachings however most clients use religion.
Role of Elders
The Elders offer support and guidance to community members in times of crisis.
Role of youth
They have peer groups such a peer helpers group and a girl power group. They also host leisure and recreational activities such dances and arts and crafts.
Evaluation Design
They have client based questionnaires which give their clients the opportunity to offer suggestions as to how to better their services.
Evaluation Results
To determine what the people need and to improve their programs.
